  • Cannonball opens the concert with a little of his humor and states this is the first American jazz recording in Japan, which is probably the truth but I wonder if Davis or Coltrane beat him. I have had most of his catalog through the years and narrowed it down to 10 or so. He has a lot of records with one or two songs I like, but his LPs lack consistency in my opinion. There is little doubt that the man was prolific and talented, but there is something that holds me back in the same way Sonny Rollins does. This concert is something else. Modal and hard bop are the modes (samba and eastern influence is there) and it's pretty close to flawless in my opinion. I have little doubt that this concert was extremely influential to the jazz scene in Japan. Lateef ties Julian for two song compositions. Ellington's Come Sunday is hauntingly beautiful. Coltrane's influence is heard. The album is light, playful, soulful and entertaining. Suggested.
